Pininfarina Sintesi Concept

Body style: Engine: 2+2 Coupe

Engine: Electric-hydrogen hybrid fuel cell, 700bhp

The first Pininfarina concept in three years proved worth the wait. The car features an innovative layout thanks to its hybrid fuel cell powertrain, but the real success is visual. After whetting appetites with an elegant, attractive shape, it presents a feast of innovative details that make the car truly memorable.

The door sills are a focal point, similar to those seen on Pininfarina's Nido concept of '04, and are once again quite striking and generally successful. Perhaps my favourite, if not the most important, detail is seen in the parting line at the base of the A-pillar, which appears to float off the beltline.

This trick feature adds strength to the uncluttered beltline, while lightening the visual weight of the pillar. The upward bump in the chin takes a little getting used to, but when viewed as a part of the whole, especially in conjunction with the rear, makes more sense and showcases brilliant surfacing.

The wheels are forgettable, and the interior is a little bland for a luxurious, stylish 2+2, but this concept does what concepts are supposed to do. It grabs attention and generates excitement about things to come.
